Training of Professors from Undergraduate Universities
- The PI, Dr. Song, secured two supplementary Research Opportunity Award (ROA) under the Research in Undergraduate Institutions (RUI) program in both 2004 and 2005.
- The goal of the ROA supplementary award is to train professors from undergraduate teaching universities through participating in the PI’s ongoing NSF funded projects.
- In the summer of 2004, Dr. R. A. Tarefder of Texas Southern University, a historical black and undergraduate teaching university, worked with the PI on the research issue of “Vibration reduction of a frame structure using shape memory braces.” Two conference papers have been published.
- In the summer of 2005, Dr. Y. Zhang of Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU), a historical black and undergraduate teaching university, worked with the PI on the research topics of “Automatic control of shape memory alloy braces for vibration reduction of a frame structure,” and “Optimal control of structures using smart dampers.” Two conference papers have been published. Dr. Zhang also introduced the smart materials technology into his teaching at PVAMU.
